Royston Opens Engine Test Facility

Diesel engineering specialist Royston Limited is offering its expertise to any organisation that needs to test engines up to 2000 bhp.

Jan. 18, 2012 - PRLog -- This new capability follows the installation of a dynamometer that its engineers use regularly to measure the horsepower generated by engines that the company has serviced or restored. The comparative rarity of such a capability has consequently encouraged the company to offer its engine testing facilities to a wider market.
Royston Limited is well known in the marine and offshore industries for its engine servicing capabilities but its test facility is now being made available to any organisation with diesel engines that require problem diagnosis. These might include pumps, generators vehicle engines or industrial power units. The Newcastle-based company is able to receive a defective engine at its factory where it can analyse its performance in detail and, if required, undertake any servicing or repair work or return it for in-house repair.
Lawrence Brown, managing director of Royston Limited explained the new facility being offered by his company. “The ability to measure the output of an engine is an important part of any fault diagnosis. We have invested in a new, higher capacity dynamometer so that we can support our own clients. However, we realised that there might be other service organisations in the north east of England that could make use of this facility occasionally. If so, I would be pleased to hear from them and discuss how we might help,” he said.
Engineers from Royston are regularly sent around the world to work on engines aboard ships and oil platforms. This is a major part of the company’s business and can include undertaking major overhauls of any size of diesel engine from any manufacturer in-situ. The company’s workforce includes many former original equipment manufacturers’ engineers who are able to apply the latest knowledge and expertise to a customer’s engines.
Whenever possible, customers send their defective engines to Royson’s well-equipped Tyneside workshops. The company is then able to undertake whatever work is needed to restore it to its original condition. Testing plays an important part in this and the company’s facilities make it possible to simulate operating conditions while monitoring such aspects as oil pressure at high idle speeds, boost pressures and, with the new dynamometer, engine output up to 2000 bhp. These can be measured against the manufacturer’s specifications and any remedial work identified.         “Many of our customers find it advantageous to have older engines restored as they are unaffected by the new emission laws,” explained Lawrence Brown. “We aim to restore any engine so that it is as good as new. This means that a customer is spared the high cost of a new emission-compliant engine while regaining the use of a unit that may have been unused for some time. We are often sent engines that appear only fit for the scrap heap yet we are able to return them looking and performing as they did when they came out of the box when they were first delivered.”
In addition to its Tyneside premises, Royston also has substantial workshop facilities in Perth, Australia. This enables the company to quickly deploy teams capable of working on engines of any make or age to anywhere in the world.  Ship and platform operators consequently benefit from the convenience of being able to entrust all of their engines and generators to a single service company that can fit-in with the vessel’s operating schedule.
Royston Limited was founded over 30 years ago and in addition to its engine maintenance and repair services, the company also designs and manufactures enginei, a fuel and engine monitoring system. This enables both onboard crew and ship operators ashore to monitor and manage the fuel consumption of every vessel in a fleet and to ensure that their engines are being used in the most efficient and economical way.
