Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema Reaches Its 5-Year Goal in 3 Years
Idyllwild, CA (January 17, 2012) — The Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema has reached its five-year goal of sustainability in its third year, 2012.
In its inception year of 2010, festival director Stephen Savage’s goal for the new film festival was for it to grow annually and become viable as a sustaining event in five years. That goal was reached early this year, with the 2012 mountaintop festival attracting over 500 attendees, yielding its first profitable year.
Savage brought Philip Calderone on board to help organize, his first year as festival chairman. “My goal was to make this a reputation-building year.” says Calderone, “We know Idyllwild is a beautiful place for a film festival and we could find great films to screen. The challenge then was to put those elements together, get the word out, and let the hopefully satisfied filmmakers and attendees spread the word to launch us into next year. That’s happening, even beyond my expectations.”
“This gives us a huge boost for next year. We’ll join Withoutabox (an online application submission service for film festivals) and that will give us wider and more formal exposure to filmmakers,”
The festival also introduced its new award statue, the IIFOC Coyote Paw. The quote of the evening from the Sunday Awards Ceremony came from Adam Fenderson, co-writer/director of the documentary, “First Generation” after winning his second award of the evening—first for Best Soundtrack, then for Best Documentary. Holding his two Coyote Paws, Fenderson exclaimed, “Wow, now I have half a dog.”

“I’ve been to a lot of film festivals but this is the first one I’ve seen that has a real sense of community,” said Saba Moor-Doucette with Hanunan Media, producers of the short film “In Transit” which screened Saturday. “People come to support this (event) not just because they have a film in it.”
