Follow on Google News | A New Blog For Those Who Love Pets - The Two SophiesFrom Marvin Ross and David Shaw, the author and illustrator of The Original Reigning Cats and Dogs: A Lighthearted Look at Pets and Their Owners. This is a new venture for the team that, in the past, produced books on parenting and bureaucracies.
Why The Original? In the late 1980s, David and Marvin wrote a book called Reigning Cats and Dogs…………… only to discover that others had later used that title. When we decided to revise the book, we added in The Original to indicate our previous use of the title. Ross and Shaw have had a number of dogs over the years and, a couple of years ago, David acquired a new dog he called Sophie. In October, 2010, Ross's adopted dog, Bailey the Bichon, passed away at the age of 15 1/2. In October of 2011, his family adopted a 3 year old rescue Shipoo also called Sophie. We now both have dogs named Sophie who share one irritating characteristic – they are both runners but more of that as our blog progresses. Before collaborating on this latest venture, David and Marvin had done a number of books together other than pet books. Their first collaboration was in the late 1970s when Ross wrote and David illustrated a book called Cover Your Ass or How to Survive in a Government Bureaucracy. Ross was Bureaucrat X and did media interviews with a hood on his head to hide his identity. They then did Daddy Dearest: A Guide For First Time Fathers and Sorry Daddy, A Father’s Guide to Toddlers. You can find out more of The Original Reigning Cats and Dogs at http://www.bridgeross.com/ David Shaw is the president of David Shaw and Associates. Born in London, England, he emigrated to Canada in 1954. He graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1969 and worked as a designer and later art director for McClelland and Stewart book publishers from 1969-1976. In 1977, he founded his own company and did design and production for Hurtig Publishers (1977-1989) including the design of the first edition of The Canadian Encyclopedia. Since 1990 he has worked primarily as an illustrator and has been involved with a number of original book projects for children and adults. Marvin Ross is a native Torontonian now living in Dundas, Ontario about 45 miles southwest of Toronto. A former Ontario civil servant, he has been writing for over 30 years. He is now president of Bridgeross Communications. Originally established as his writing arm, it now publishes books and produces documentary films. While the main theme of Bridgeross is on mental illness, its titles include humor and anthologies.
