Puccini’s Il trittico is a collection of three one-act operas, Il tabarro, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, the third of which, a farce full of greed and conniving, is the most popular and performed opera of the set. The operas premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in December 1918 and received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. The performance that will screen at BIG ARTS was captured live from a recent performance at The Royal Opera House in London.
Il tabarro explores the dangerous nature of infidelity and how jealousy can ultimately lead a man to commit the most serious act of vengeance. Suor Angelica tells the tale of Sister Angelica, a nun sent by her family to the convent as punishment for giving birth to an illegitimate child. But when a relative arrives to inform her that her child has died, Angelica considers the most drastic of measures in an attempt to be reunited. Gianni Schicchi sees its greedy characters rewrite a deceased family member’s will so as to maintain an estate to which a local church is bequeathed.
