Woodbridge High School Selects Dell KACE for Systems Management

• Estimated saving of at least £14,000 through desktop power management • Significant time savings on Windows 7 rollout and system upgrades, equivalent to an extra staff member

Jan. 13, 2012 - PRLog -- BRACKNELL, UK – 12th January 2012 - Dell KACE™ today announced that Woodbridge High School has chosen the Dell KACE systems management appliance to meet its IT and asset management needs. As part of the implementation, Woodbridge is using the Dell KACE K1000 Management Appliance to manage its Microsoft® Windows 7 and Office 2010 migration projects as well as for general IT management tasks. As a result, the school has benefitted from better ICT support, as well as power management savings of at least £14,000 since the installation was completed.

Woodbridge School supports 1600 students and 850 computers with an IT support team of just three people. To manage and control its desktop assets, the school implemented the K1000 Management Appliance, providing the following functionality for the school:

• Asset Management
• Change, Release and Patch Management
• Configuration Management
• Desktop Power Management
• Incident Management
• Problem Management
• Service Desk
• Security Management

Dell KACE has also played an integral role in the school’s migration planning for deploying Windows 7. The school had originally allotted three weeks for the migration to be completed, but the actual move has taken only three days. This included migrating 150 machines automatically in one morning.

Charlie Cochrane, network manager at Woodbridge High School, commented, “The Dell KACE appliances have provided the school with a simple and effective way to manage its IT assets across our networks. The amount of time that has been recouped on day-to-day management tasks has been significant, while we have also seen hard cost savings through the in-built desktop power management functionality in the appliance. At least £14,000 has been saved by automatically powering off machines overnight, and we have seen more opportunities for power saving by turning off machines that are not in use during the day as well. Overall, the Dell KACE appliance has helped us to achieve more efficient IT management practices across the school.”

As part of the implementation, Dell KACE has helped the school’s IT team to follow the guidelines for IT management laid out by the Framework for ICT Technical Support (FITS), the non-profit organisation set up to help ICT staff in the education sector. There are ten guidelines in FITS, the Dell KACE appliance directly helps the Woodbridge IT team to easily achieve seven of them and parts of the others.

Nick Madhavji, managing director at the solutions provider Joskos Solutions which was responsible for the installation at Woodbridge High School, commented, “With the increasing budgetary constraints schools are under they face a lot of pressure on a day-to-day basis to keep the ICT assets running.  ICT is very much a cross-curricular service that teachers, learners and school staff depend on being available at all times. In today’s learning environment unplanned downtime is something that quite simply isn’t acceptable – the negative impact on teaching and learning is far too high.  At the same time it is important that schools plan ahead for larger infrastructure projects such as Windows OS migrations.  The Dell KACE appliance has helped the team at Woodbridge manage their IT resources in an automated way, as well as being at the core of completing projects quickly and effectively - which has resulted in their own staff being able to use their time and energy more efficiently. Working closely with the team at the school, we have measured their efficiency gains as being equal to the time an additional member of staff would have provided, something the school’s Senior Management Team have been especially impressed with”

“Schools and colleges across the UK continue to face budget pressures around the management of desktops and other ICT assets, as teams are small and have an increasing number of devices, applications and machines that have to be supported in the classroom. Dell KACE appliances offer a cost-effective and fast way to improve the support that ICT staff can provide by automating management tasks wherever possible. This not only helps staff to be more productive, but also lets them dedicate more time to meeting the needs of pupils and teachers around ICT,” commented Seann Gardiner, European Sales Director, Dell KACE.

Dell KACE is exhibiting at the BETT Show, the world’s leading education and ICT conference, from 11th to 14th January 2012 at London Olympia. To see the Dell KACE appliances in action there, visit the Dell stand at B20.
