The idea of making 17 January Art’s Birthday was proposed by sometime Fluxus artist Robert Filliou in 1963, and artist groups around the world now host an array of events to mark the occasion.
The festivities in Swansea begin on Friday 13 January at 1pm, at the YMCA on the Kingsway as the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery presents, ‘Old Age Should Burn And Rave At Close Of Day’, a short, playful performance piece devised by artist/ filmmaker Matt Hulse, along with new work from Hedsor (Karl and Kimberly Foster) and video work from Silas.
The three short performances involve a 'Welshman,' a 'Scotsman' and an 'Englishman';
This is the work's UK premiere following its debut at Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2011.
Over the past five years, Arts Birthday celebrations in Wales have included the ‘three year four day working week’ radio station, Café Genie, art-themed three course meals, live link ups with celebrations across the UK as well as paper hats and many cakes.
Arts Birthday Wales has previously worked with galleries/ art organisations including Elysium, Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Framework, Supersaurus and with artists Barrie Hole, Joan Jones, Matt Hulse, Steven Paige, The Stylophone Orchestra of Great Britain and Foundation Art and Design students from Swansea Metropolitan University.
This year the collaborations and activities are further extended with three different events. In addition to the film screening at the YMCA by the Glynn Vivian this Friday, you can also see ‘Klang Canteen’, a cassette-based exhibition of sonic works, at Elysium Gallery, Swansea on Saturday 14 January at 7pm, with works from Belgium, Canada, USA, Wales and the rest of the UK.
On Art’s Birthday, Tuesday 17 January, there will be an evening of Cafe Scenes at the renowned Kardomah Cafe in partnership with Mission Gallery.
Art’s Birthday Swansea organiser, Barnaby Dicker, said, "Although the occasion is always ‘Art's Birthday’, each year's celebration has a different form and emphasis and the events are shaped by everyone who comes and gets involved.”
Fern Thomas from Swansea artists group Supersaurus said, “It is a great opportunity for artists to come together to celebrate the birth of art in anyway they see fit. The Art’s Birthday events embrace the ethos and fun of Fluxus whilst posing the important question of ‘What is art?’ or ‘What can art be?’”
