Indiana College Students Will Address Rural Community Issues

Students from Indiana Campus Compact member campuses across the state will be participating in a week-long alternative break focusing on rural poverty issues in Grant County
 
Jan. 11, 2012 - PRLog -- INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Campus Compact is partnering with Taylor University to host “Addressing Rural Community Needs,” an alternative break experience for Indiana college students.  From May 21 through May 26, 2012, a group of students from various Indiana Campus Compact member campuses will spend the week learning about the issues affecting rural community members. . During this trip, students will engage in a unique experiential learning opportunity by performing volunteer service and addressing a critical need affecting our state. Students will also gain valuable skills, resources, training, and support for implementing effective Alternative Break programs on their campus.
   
From May 21-26, 2012, up to 20 students from across the state will come together to serve the Marion, Indiana community. ICC and Taylor University will partner with a number of nonprofit organizations located within Grant County community. These partnerships will allow students to gain a deeper understanding of the issues effecting rural communities. . They will learn about the cultural distinctions that one may find in rural communities; rural poverty; the importance of building strong relationships between campuses and communities in which they reside; and what resources are available to address these issues.

Over the course of the trip, students from ICC member campuses will:
-   Spend 5 nights and 6 days addressing rural poverty in Marion, Indiana;
-   Serve in a variety of capacities in a local thrift store and food pantry at St. Martin’s Community Center;
-   Learn about rural poverty and other issues affecting the community;
-   Be exposed to racial, spiritual, and socio-economic diversity;
-   Build relationships with students from across the state;
-   Learn practical applications for implementing successful Alternative Break programs in their own communities;
-   Receive valuable tools, resources, and share models of successful Alternative Break program components; and  
-   Spend a day processing their experience through guided post-service reflection.

Funding for “Addressing Rural Community Needs” was provided by Indiana Campus Compact through generous support from Lilly Endowment, Inc..  Indiana Campus Compact’s annual Alternative Break Institutional Program (ABI) awards one member campus a $1,500 grant to support an Indiana-based Alternative Break.  The ABI program provides member campuses with the opportunity to showcase their campus and community and participation is available to students from Indiana Campus Compact member campuses. Students serve within a local Indiana community and take resources, tools, and experiences back to their own campuses and communities.
