Follow on Google News | Can Standards and IPR co-exist?Jakob Balling, IP Specialist, Arla Foods, and Prof. Dr. Knut Blind, Chair of Innovation Economics at Fraunhofer FOKUS and TU Berlin, join Legal IQ for a short discussion on optimal trademark management
By: IQPC So, firstly, Jakob, can you explain the specific arrangement of how Arla Foods manages its trademark portfolio? J Balling: Sure, I can. The Arla Foods management of our trademark is quite different from most other companies in the fact that we work with a completely outsourced solution. We used to have a full scale in house trademark department and the department was outsourced in the end of 2006 and I was then hired to join Arla in the summer of 2007. And currently I’m the only one in house and, as such, working with the outsourced department and responsible for managing the outsourced department. The outsourced department is consisting of somewhere between four and six, depending on the workload – four and six full-time – one to two being consultants and the rest being assistants working on portfolio. So, it is quite different. Legal IQ: And what was the strategic background to the decision to outsource your trademark management? J Balling: Well, basically, there are two ways of looking at why Arla decided to outsource. One is strategic, and the strategy behind it was that Arla wanted the in house, both the business and also the IP people in house, to focus more on strategy and more on the business side of IP and less on the portfolio administration side. And obviously that’s the strategic background. The Nordic IPR Forum is due to take place 19 - 21 March, 2012 at the Sheraton Stockholm Hotel.
