Will Beckham Get Men Talking Pants?

Men's underwear design has come a long way in recent years and yet men are still reluctant to talk about what's in their drawers. Perhaps the launch of David Beckham's underwear range will finally get them mentioning their unmentionables.

Jan. 10, 2012 - PRLog -- Men are notoriously reluctant to talk about underwear - for themselves of course, as women’s lingerie is quite another matter.
So will David Beckham’s move into men’s underwear design finally lift the lid on the male undies drawer?
LA Galaxy footballer Beckham is following his wife’s footsteps into fashion design with a collection of underwear and loungewear for Swedish retailer H&M.
The hype has begun, ahead of the official launch on February 2nd, and already debate is bubbling about the styling and colours of his first creations.
While both men and women will happily view and discuss women’s lingerie, men tend to need a clear reason to express any opinion whatever about the design of undies intended for them. This is strange, considering the way men’s underwear and swimwear design has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years. Men’s collections are just as colourful, more technically savvy and as luxurious as lingerie for ladies.
Beckham last made a splash on the men’s underwear scene in 2009 when he modelled for Armani. He was followed by fellow soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo and tennis ace Rafael Nadal. Another Italian undies brand - D&G - signed up the Italian national football, rugby and swimming teams to model its designs.
Beckham says his first collection is very much his personal style, incorporating his desire for comfort. The branding is low-key, the shapes simple in briefs, boxer shorts, vests, T-shirts, pyjamas made up of long plain pants and a granddad top, and long johns with padded knees.
Within the global men’s underwear market, the collection is classic, with no doubt a broad general appeal. High fashion trends on this sector are generally more daring - for 2012 influences range from retro to military styling, invisible undies to nouveau jockstraps (http://www.deadgoodundies.com/style/jockstraps/).
