Jan. 9, 2012 - PRLog -- If you are suffering from an addiction you are not alone. Alcohol abuse and drug addiction affects millions of Americans each year. The underlying addictive personality disorder is even more widespread. People can become addicted to shopping, gambling, work or sport. Others become addicted to perfection and are unable to handle failure or imperfection. Still others become addicted to body image and often end up feeling very dissatisfied with themselves, because it is just impossible to satisfy any addiction.

Addictions hurt, whether they involve substance abuse or other form of compulsive behavior. There are of course many structured programs available such as the 12 Step Programs, AA and Residential Services, and these can be a good place to start. Group sessions are a good way to see that you are not alone and that there are dozens of people going through the exact same feelings as you. Sharing your feelings in a group of people who really understand what you are feeling is very valuable.

However, not all people feel comfortable sharing intimate and embarrassing experiences in front of other people. Also, while sharing and group support is important, it does not necessarily change the underlying compulsive drive and emotional problems that caused the addiction in the first place.

Today, people feel much more comfortable turning to the internet for support with their emotional problems, including addiction, anxiety and depression. Dr. Peter Strong has developed a very effective system called Mindfulness Therapy, which is now available online via live Skype sessions for those people who want some guidance in learning how to heal their emotional problems and control their addictive impulses.

Mindfulness Therapy is a modern form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) that uses the awareness skill called mindfulness to help people change the way they relate to their emotions. With Mindfulness Therapy people learn how to stop being a victim of their emotions and compulsions and this can produce very profound changes in a remarkably short time.
