2012 Nissan Kia - Design Led Transformation

The 2012 Kia Rio is one out nine new models introduced by Kia since 2009. Kia's newest products are radically different from previous models and generations more cutting-edge and attractive. Kia calls the whole thing a "design-led transformation" of the brand. That means they want big innovations in small packages.

Kia's idea is to have the right products in the right segment. In the past, Kia was the bottom-feeder brand, always appealing to segment customers as the least expensive model. No more. As Kia moves to becoming a full-range brand, it is improving its image, expanding its lineup and building cars in America.

Building cars in America means it is serious about the American market. It is currently building vehicles in West Point, Ga., at a plant that could produce 360,000 vehicles a year if necessary.

According to Tom Loveless, vice president of sales, Kia is the fastest growing brand in America.

Kia has a 3.9 percent market share, but this is the 17th consecutive month of growth in its market share. With Kia getting residual valuations of its cars improved by 39 percent, Kia says its models now have the lowest cost of ownership of any brand selling cars in the United States. And of its conquest customers (those buying a Kia for the first time), two-thirds are people who've owned major U.S. brands before.

The Rio is a B-segment car, or what we call a subcompact. A segment of 400,000 units, that number is expected to double by 2015 as manufacturers are forced to build and sell smaller, lighter and less powerful cars in order to meet the corporate average fuel numbers that go into effect in 2016. So more expensive cars probably will be appearing in the B-segment.

Kia's getting a head start by making style more important, and offering more features in a car that offers a much nicer driving experience than previous subcompacts. The Rio was designed in Kia's design studio in California, and features a new interpretation of the Kia "face."

The car is about an inch longer, with the wheels pushed a bit out to the corners, increasing the cabin size. The interior has more soft-touch items and the design creates a horizontal focus that's pleasing to the eye, as well as making the interior appear even bigger than it is.

This car comes in two flavors: a five-door hatchback that's the high-style model, and a four-door sedan that's coming before the end of the year. Both cars are already on sale in Asia, and the hatchback is in showrooms here.

In addition to a new design filled with much more style, the Rio truly loses its residual frumpiness, which really used to define this segment. Interestingly, the five-door hatchbacks are perceived as being more of a guy's car more sporty and more cool, maybe even a better performer. It has the same performance, but the sedan is seen as more safe and dependable, and women buy more of them than men.

The Rio uses 63 percent high-strength steel, something only luxury cars used not long ago. But now it moves energy around and away from the passenger compartment. There's also a fair bit of sound damping in the Rio, making it much quieter than one would expect.

Thanks to work done to the suspension, including stiffer damping, the Rio drives much bigger  and I mean that in a good way on this small a car than one would expect, too. On the highway, the ride is smooth, without bunches of bumps transmitting themselves directly to the seat of your pants. Luxury cars are really good at this because luxury cars are always big, which makes everything easier.

2012 Kia Rio - Trim Levels

The Rio  comes in three trim levels, and all have plenty of standard features. The LX base model has a beginning price of $13,600, and you can add another $1,100 for the automatic transmission. Trim includes body-color door handles and side mirrors, rear wiper and washer, multi-reflector headlamps and 15-inch steel wheels with 185/65R15 tires, while the Rio 5-door also comes with a standard rear spoiler to improve aerodynamics.

The EX is the volume model and includes standard Bluetooth and starts at $16,500. With this model, you get power door locks with keyless entry and a chrome front grille surround.

The top of the brand SX trim has a beginning price of $17,700, and includes standard 17-inch wheels with 205/45R17 tires, fog lamps, LED accent lights and rear combination lamps, dual chrome exhaust tips, power-folding outside heated mirrors with turn signal indicators and, unique for the Rio 5-door, projector headlamps.

There's also a sport-tuned suspension, larger front brakes, projection headlamps, fog lamps, as well as Kia's UVO voice-activated infotainment system standard. This won't be coming on the first models, but should be available later in the fall. This includes a 4.3-inch color touch screen and rear camera.
