Orvieto, in Umbria, a city that dates back to Etruscan times, was once a major center of Etruscan civilization. The city is famous for its Duomo, or Gothic cathedral, which was begun in 1263.
Jim Hilgendorf, the owner of The Matchmakers real estate, is also a filmmaker and the producer of The Tribute Series, a highly-acclaimed series of travel films. One of his films is on Tuscany and Umbria.
Below are some video clips on Orvieto.
Jim and his wife Elizabeth both fell in love with Tuscany and Umbria, and are introducing their real estate clients to these areas.
Their first trip together to Italy was about ten years ago. Jim was beginning his film on Tuscany and Umbria, and Elizabeth came along also.
Their first stop was Orvieto, where they rented a small villa a few miles outside of the city for several days. The same evening they arrived, they were directed to a small family-run restaurant a few miles outside the city for an evening meal. This meal was a life-changing experience, one of the many they experienced while in Tuscany and Umbria. The pasta was incredible, something neither one had ever tasted before, the real thing.
Orvieto was a wonderful experience. The city above ground sits dramatically on a large butte; but there is also a city all around the base of this butte made up of necropoli, or stone burial sites, where the dead were buried. Interestingly, the early Etruscans believed that life here on earth was only a passing thing, and so they built their houses in the city of wood. But their tombs, where they were to live for eternity in the afterlife, had to be built of something more durable, so they were built of stone.
Umbria is known as the "Green Heart of Italy", and the countryside is very lovely.
