UK independent imprint signs US professor for literary speculative fiction

American literary scholar signs with UK publisher for first fictional work

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Jan. 9, 2012 - Elsewhen Press, a small independent UK publisher specialising in Speculative Fiction, today announced that David A. Colón, Assistant Professor of English at TCU in Fort Worth, Texas, has signed a publishing deal for an undisclosed sum for his first work of fiction, The Lost Men.  Described as literary speculative fiction, The Lost Men is an allegory of the relationship between the human condition and the perception of fate.  Colón's work in poetry and poetics has appeared in many respected publications over the past decade, but The Lost Men is his first published fiction.

David had the idea for the story while teaching an undergraduate course in rhetoric at Stanford University.  “It got me thinking about a literary utopia,” he said, “I envisioned a world in which every individual was completely self-reliant, and to create this I imagined that such a place would have to be far less populated than the world is now.  So, I created this scenario, placed it historically in an alternate future, and went from there.  All the circumstances flowed from this premise.”

Al Murray, Managing Publisher of Elsewhen Press said “As a new imprint we are very pleased that David Colón has chosen Elsewhen Press to publish this work.  It will be a significant addition, not only to our own catalogue, but to the speculative fiction genre.”

Elsewhen Press adopts a digital-first policy, initially publishing new titles in digital format and subsequently in print editions, the reverse of most long-established publishing houses.  “This approach allows us to be more innovative and exciting,” explained Murray, “and publish titles like The Lost Men that would otherwise be beyond the resources of a small independent publisher”.

The Lost Men will be published in a digital edition just before Easter this year and in a print edition in the summer.

About David A. Colón

David A. Colón was born in Brooklyn, New York, USA. On Saturday mornings – before he was old enough to play baseball – he would beg his father to read him again “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” or “Kubla Khan.”  Twenty years later he packed everything he owned into a truck and drove across America to study literature at a good university in California. He now finds himself in Texas, a professor of English. He loves literature that explores the innermost darkness of the human experience while respecting the beauty of language at its most pristine. And he believes that fiction should be just that; it should be that which nothing else can be.
