PRLog - Jan. 9, 2012 - SANIBEL ISLAND, Fla. -- Critically-acclaimed Chicago cabaret artist Joan Curto brings her one-woman show, Sassy, Brassy & Classy: The Songs of Ethel Merman and Mary Martin, to BIG ARTS Thursday, January 19 at 8 p.m. Curto will take the stage in BIG ARTS Schein Performance Hall, 900 Dunlop Road, Sanibel. Described as “a seasoned interpreter who makes every note count,” Curto breathes new life into classics from the celebrated catalogues of Broadway legends Ethel Merman and Mary Martin in this show that Chicago Tribune jazz critic Howard Reich calls, “an uncommonly effective homage.” Through Sassy, Brassy & Classy, Curto channels Merman and Martin to capture the energy with which these musical theater pioneers commanded their roles in musicals made famous by composers such as Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and Rodgers and Hammerstein. Merman is credited with catapulting show tunes There’s No Business Like Show Business and I Got Rhythm to fame; Martin made her mark originating roles in South Pacific and The Sound of Music, and won a Tony Award for her performance in Peter Pan.
Curto has performed at many of the country’s most prestigious music venues, including New York City’s Jazz at Lincoln Center and Danny’s Skylight Room. Curto has also been dubbed a “cabaret icon” by NBC Chicago.
Joan Curto concert supported by Benefactor Sponsor John M. & Mary Jo Boler.
