Jan. 6, 2012 - PRLog -- Artist Tom Montan has just completed a portrait of  running “phenom” Julia Stamps-Mallon, as she heads to Houston Texas in her bid for a place on the 2012 USA Olympic Marathon team. In a unique coincidence this painting will also be sent to London’s National Portrait Gallery in February as Mr. Montan’s entry in the BP Portrait Award 2012.

Sonoma County artist Tom Montan has just completed a larger than life portrait of Santa Rosa California’s running “phenom” Julia Stamps-Mallon, just before she heads to Houston Texas in her bid for a place on the 2012 USA Olympic Marathon team for the summer games in London. This portrait is painted in oils and took several months to complete. In a unique coincidence the painting will also be sent to London’s National Portrait Gallery in February as Mr. Montan’s entry in the BP Portrait Award 2012. The annual BP Portrait Award is the most prestigious portrait competition in the world, promoting the very best in contemporary portrait painting. Over the past thirty-two years the BP Portrait Award has proved to be the launch pad for the careers of many successful portrait artists.

Tom and Julia met this fall when she coached his daughter’s high school cross country team. As Tom recalls, “Watching the team train, seeing Julia’s boundless passion for the sport of distance running, and hearing her unique story, I was truly inspired to paint this portrait of her.” Tom adds “Julia was born to run, and she continues to push herself to greater heights, even with two young daughters, she still manages to run 15 miles on most days. This painting titled “the sound of white” is my attempt at conveying the beauty of her irascible determination and unwavering spirit. I am hoping to see double ‘Julia’ this summer in London”

Tom has lived and worked in Sonoma County for the last 30 years. His earlier sculpture work gained local recognition and sparked some controversy, notably, as part of team of artists that created “the Door” sculpture in Sebastopol, California in 1999.  He has been singularly focused in recent months on large-scale portraits. The “sound of white” is a departure for him not only away from sculpture to painting, but in his combination of hyper-realism and abstract painting techniques.

This painting will be on display in the store of Julia’s long time coach and mentor Danny Aldridge in his popular running apparel store Heart and Sole, at 65 Brookwood Avenue  in Santa Rosa California. The painting will be in their window from Friday January 6 through Friday January 20th.
