The Award is given based on reviews and recommendations left in 2011 by 530,000 holidaymakers worldwide.

Awards have gone to hotels all around the world with the most going to hotels in Europe but there are also winners in Africa, Asia and America.
Great Britain scooped two awards with both awarded hotels in the capital in London and a hotel in Florida holds an award for the USA.

For a hotel to receive an award they must meet certain criteria which include a minimum of 40 reviews in 2011 and a recommendation rate of at least 90%. They must also have at least 3.5 suns in average. The sun system is used by holiday check visitors to rate the hotel in different areas with one sun being very poor and six suns being very good.

The HolidayCheck Award 2012 is an award from travelers for travelers. The information can be used to help get an insight into the reputation of international hotels. HolidayChecks database has collected over 7 million opinions and impressions for more than 130,000 hotels in 220 countries.
