Today marks a day that will go down in history as the Brooklyn Navy Yard opened its doors to the public for the first time in 200 years to see their newest addition, the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center. The Brooklyn Navy Yard Center showcases the history and innovation of the Brooklyn Navy Yard and includes an exhibition celebrating the Navy Yard’s past, present and future as well as promotes the role of the Yard and its tenants as they create jobs and sustainable urban growth.
"For the first time, the public is going to be able to come in behind our gates and learn about the extraordinarily rich history of the yard and also about how we've become a national model for sustainable urban industrial parks," Kimball said.
The Brooklyn Navy Yard has been a vital part of American history as a major military shipbuilding location during World War I and World War II and even through the Cold War and the War in Afghanistan. Today the industrial park is home to the greatest concentration of manufacturing and green businesses in New York City.
Mayor Bloomberg and the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation President Andrew Kimball cut the ribbon at Building 92/ Brooklyn Navy Yard Center today and announced the new hiring commitment from the Navy Yard tenants.
