Jan. 3, 2012 - PRLog -- Online Counseling Therapy is becoming more popular than ever for helping people overcome anxiety and depression. Working with an Online Therapist is more accepted as the first choice today, especially with the improvements in Skype that allow face-to-face communication in real time. As a professional psychotherapist, I have noticed a dramatic increase in the number of clients who prefer to conduct their therapy sessions online in the comfort of their own homes. All my clients say that they find online sessions using Skype to be less intimidating, and feel very much more at ease with an online therapist than in the traditional, and more clinical office visits with a therapist. Feeling comfortable is important and facilitates the therapeutic process greatly.

General Anxiety Disorder is a very common condition that affects many of us at some time in our lives. At any one time it is estimated that over 10 million people in the US suffer from some form of GAD. Many are actively seeking treatment through medication or some form of psychotherapy, either online or in-person. Most people recognize that medications are useful for reducing acute symptoms, but do not heal the underlying cause of anxiety or depression. To do this, some form of psychotherapy or counseling is recommended. This combined approach has been shown to be most effective in numerous studies. Many people on medications would like to stop taking medications due to their adverse side effects, and turn to psychotherapy to learn how to better manage their anxiety.

Mindfulness Therapy is a form of Cognitive Therapy that focuses on changing the emotions that lie at the core of anxiety, panic attacks and depression. Change these core emotions and you will reduce the level of anxiety. One of the central teachings in Mindfulness Therapy is to learn how to hold an emotion in your awareness without becoming reactive and without becoming overwhelmed by the emotion or memory or thought. This takes a bit of work, but most people learn how to do this, how to “sit” with their emotions, quite quickly. Establishing a non-reactive relationship with your anxiety is absolutely central for healing and transformation. It creates the right inner conditions that allow the anxiety to undergo natural transformation that leads to resolution. Reactivity, which is our usual response to anxiety and negative emotions, simply makes the anxiety worse – it feeds the anxiety. In the system of Mindfulness Therapy developed by Dr. Peter Strong, clients are taught how to build this all-important Mindfulness-based Relationship with their anxiety to facilitate healing. Because this approach is so focused, people can expect to see significant changes in their anxiety within 4-6 sessions.
