Dec. 31, 2011 - PRLog -- Nevada Public Computer Centers is a service of the Las Vegas Urban League. Its mission is to positively impact people in the community to become self-sufficient by providing access to technology, information, and resources that promote successful growth opportunities.

In 2010 the Las Vegas Urban League received a Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) grant totaling $4.7 million for three years. With the help of community partners, the ARRA funds were utilized to create Nevada Public Computer Centers. As a result, 31 free public computer centers in Clark County are now open to the public. Many centers are manned with instructors who offer one-on-one help with job searching and résumés. Free computer classes are also offered at some centers, and select sites are staffed with bilingual instructors who facilitate classes in Spanish. Currently, 5,000 visitors utilize the centers every week.

“The program is very successful, and it’s time for us to pursue sustainability opportunities with our community partners to keep the program going past January 2013,” said Jeff Drothler, BTOP Program Manager. “We will be inviting members of the business community, individuals or corporations, to become involved and collaborate with us around the community and technology services we provide.”

To get the conversation started, community partner meetings will take place throughout next year. One of the topics will be the development of a BTOP Sustainability Council. “Nevada Public Computer Centers is a vital community service, and we must engage as many community partners as possible to continue our work which benefits so many on a daily basis,” said Christina Clark, BTOP Public Relations Specialist.
