This week, star couple Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott designed an extravagant Marie Antoinette-style wedding in a special installment of “sTORIbook Weddings” on the Oxygen channel. Complete with a palatial setting, performers in period dress, and authentic French antiques, the event brought historical influences into the modern age.

In this challenging economy, however, not everyone can call on celebrity planners to create their perfect day. But Paris destination wedding planner Kim Petyt promises it’s still possible for couples to feel like royalty on any budget. The owner and creative director of http://www.parisianevents.com and an expert in French-style weddings, Petyt notes that “less is more” when planning an affordable, but regal affair. “One French element that Tori and Dean used in Ashley and Ryan’s wedding was feathers,” she observed after the program. “The key to an affordably chic wedding is choosing one royal motif and echoing it throughout.” A few of those carefully placed feathers in the bridal bouquet and table centerpieces, for example, add a stylish touch.

Petyt points to other French motifs to illustrate further. Both the Emblem of Versailles and the Monogram of Marie Antoinette are a snap to find online and can easily be reproduced on invitations, favors, or in decorations for the reception, she advises. Candles are also a budget-friendly decoration, she continues. Brides wanting a classic Marie Antoinette look can opt for candelabras in wrought iron with white or pale pastel taper candles. Those desiring a more daring “downtown” version can substitute vivid colors – hot pink, chartreuse green, or electric blue candles in black baroque candelabras make a dramatic statement.

While Marie Antoinette may be known for her excesses, paring down to a few elegant details allows for the appearance of opulence, all while saving some funds. From gold gilded Chiavari chairs to wedding favors found in the gift shop of Versailles itself , well-chosen focal elements create flair.

Whether drawn to the soft, pastel vision of Marie Antoinette or more attracted to her “royal rebel” image, today’s bride can still feel like a queen. Petyt adds that the highlight of any French wedding is the croquembouche, a tower of crème-filled puff pastries held together with caramelized sugar. This traditional French delight is now available in bakeries Stateside, offering a taste of royalty – and an easy way to let all the guests eat cake.
