By: Communications Chair, Johnston County, NC NAACP The Johnston County NAACP Branch will host the Annual Jubilee Day Celebration on Monday January 2, 2012. Jubilee Day gives black Americans the opportunity come together once a year to celebrate their freedom from slavery. Jubilee Day is a time when the history of suffering as slaves is remembered; the experience of segregation is recounted; and, the strategies for facing equality and justice for future are reshaped. Telethia Denise Barrett, Johnston County NAACP Civic Engagement Leader, Communications Chair and Founder of Adonai Beverages will be the speaker of the day. Dr. MLK Jr. Prayer Breakfast Program Johnston County branch of the NAACP presents the Dr. MLK Jr. Prayer Breakfast Program. The event will take place on January 14th, 8:30-10:30 a.m at Smithfield Middle School. Smithfield Middle School is located on 1455 Buffalo Road, Smithfield NC, 27577. The confirmed speaker will be Dr. Clarence G. Newsome, former President of Shaw University, and Dean of Howard University Divinity School. Mistress of Ceremony is 2011 Miss Black NC, 88.9 FM radio personality and recording artist, Sandra Dubose-Gibson!! Johnston County NAACP County- Johnston County NAACP will by Holding County-Wide GOTV events for Local and National Elections throughout 2012. All in efforts to Educate and Empower Voters throughout the County. "Let Your Vote Be Heard". "Listen Up Meet-Ups"; forums, and meetings will be held at high schools county wide. The goal is to ensure they have an understanding of issues affecting their communities by giving voters the opportunity to voice their concerns to candidates and elected officials in public forums. Mother of the Year The Johnston County Branch of the NAACP is now recruiting Women of Excellence ages 18 years and older for the 2012 Mother of the Year contest. The contestant raising the greatest amount of money will be crowned the 2012 WIN/Mother of the Year. The tentative culminating date is April 21, 2012. The winner will go on to compete in the NC NAACP Women of Excellence Conference that is usually held in May.
