Italian Artist Adolfo Pretorino's Dark and Beautiful Paintings at Agora Gallery

NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the compelling paintings of Italian artist, Adolfo Pretorino in The Odyssey Within: an Exhibition of Fine Art by Greek and Italian Artists
By: Joyce

Dec. 28, 2011 - PRLog -- Beginning as a youth by painting murals on the streets of his small Italian hometown, Adolfo Pretorino has evolved into a master oil painter with an important and timely message for the world. His artwork is at once dark, beautiful, and full of complexity. The faces and figures that populate Pretorino’s paintings are expertly rendered, usually in a posturized manner that removes flesh colors in favor of intense contrasts of crimson and black. He works primarily with oil, but will also use enamel and mixed media to expressively alter the surface depending on the subject.

In most of Pretorino’s paintings there is a distinct narrative, often dealing with violence, fear, and power. In this way his works are deeply compelling, not just for their intense appearance, but for the hidden messages that lie within. “We are faced with disturbing images as the purity of youth is obviously violated,” he explains. “[So] I dedicate myself to oil painting, with which I denounce the anxiety that lives in the insecurity of my generation.”

About the Exhibition:
Celebrate the holiday season by bringing the warmth and energy of the Mediterranean to your day through art that will stay with you for a lifetime. This winter, Agora Gallery is proud to present two exhibitions that will brighten your weeks and leave you full of optimism and wonder. Born of Fire: Carlo Proietto / a Solo Exhibition presents the work of a talented Italian artist whose medium of choice is classical pyrography. He uses fire and intense heat to create his intriguing artworks in a way that shows why this unusual medium deserves to become part of the contemporary art world. Evocative, powerful and bursting with vitality, the works combine a realistic perspective on the present with determined hope for the future. Equally inspirational is the art of The Odyssey Within: an Exhibition of Fine Art by Greek and Italian Artists, which embraces the rich potential of the world and encourages its audience to share the same enthusiasm for the hidden aspects of what we see.  Poignantly personal yet appealing universal, these works will find echoes in viewers’ own experiences and journeys.
