The novel "Pookoo" by Doug Shiloh is one of those outrageous "real life" novels that has the whole world crumbling around its hapless characters, and readers have found a sympathetic voice in its pages. The humor is definitely sarcastic.

"You might finish it with the feeling someone else has it bad, too," Shiloh said.

The author knows a bit about that real life.

Shiloh began work on the novel after a divorce, layoff and ensuing bankruptcy in the early 1990s and "Pookoo" details "those fun times" in an honest, but sarcastic and dark humorous way.

"The narrator  - an unemployed proofreader - is surrounded by a whole group of people and it seems they either get away with everything or are untouched by things in life, while he's having a rough time.


"It's not all gloom and doom and the book tackles that."
