Clothes for Kids Project Donates Clothing to Military Families

Dec. 21, 2011 - PRLog -- What do you get when you combine a group of motivated Armstrong volunteers, a great cause and a dash of holiday spirit? The Clothes for Kids project, which recently collected dozens of boxes of new and gently used children’s clothing for families at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah.

The university’s Greek Council and the Educational Technology Training Center joined forces to organize this special service project, designed to make the holidays even brighter for local military families. By collecting more than 3,000 clothing items for children from infants to age 18, Armstrong volunteers helped make a difference in the lives of others.

Volunteers gathered at the Armstrong Center on December 9 to sort children’s clothing into boxes to donate to more families representing 175 happy children. On December 12 and 13, Hunter Army Airfield families who filled out an interest form in advance were invited to the Armstrong Center to pick up pre-packaged boxes of clothing.

“I would to thank all the volunteers, the people who donated clothing, the Greek organizations at Armstrong, the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department and the businesses supporting this effort, including Publix, Staples and Big Lots,” said Wendy Marshall, director of the Educational Technology Training Center at Armstrong. “This is an amazing way to show community support for military families, particularly during the holiday season.”

The Clothes for Kids Project set up clothing collection boxes on the Armstrong campus and at various sites throughout Savannah. Off-campus boxes accepted clothing at the Publix at Twelve Oaks Shopping Center, the Publix at Largo Plaza, the Big Lots on Abercorn Extension and the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Precinct at Oglethorpe Mall. Hancock Day School took this on as a school project and donated a large percentage of the clothing.

“We’re truly humbled by the support of Armstrong students and faculty and the community at large,” said Marshall. “Thanks to the Clothes for Kids project, area kids will enjoy a brighter holiday season and know that we are all part of a caring community.”
