The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s Then & Now series is Denton from local authors Kim Cupit and Dr. Georgia Caraway. The book boasts more than 150 vintage and modern images, comparing the town’s past to its present. Long-time Denton residents will enjoy reminiscing, while newer residents will discover Denton’s past.
Founded in 1857 as Denton County’s fourth county seat, Denton, Texas, has changed from a frontier community to a thriving city at the apex of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. This book documents the historical landmarks that remain and those that exist only in photographs and in the hearts and minds of citizens.
Highlights of Denton:
• The book reveals how much Denton has changed, but also what has remained. It pays homage to buildings that have been destroyed in the name of progress but also illustrates the revitalization that Denton has experienced
• Interesting comparative images featured in the book include an aerial view of I-35 shortly after construction and the evolution of the downtown square
• The book looks at structures that were razed for new construction including early Denton schools and homes.
The majority of the modern images featured in Denton were taken by photographer Carl Oberman. Profits from the sale of the book will benefit the Denton County Museums.
Comparing our present to our past is how we understand our history. Arcadia’
