Cincinnati Attorney Releases Teen Driving Contract To Combat Alarming Car Accident Statistics

Dec. 21, 2011 - PRLog -- Teen driving injuries and death are at epidemic proportions. A study by AAA showed the on average 87 teens per month die in car accident crashes.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, accounting for more than one in three deaths in this age group according to the Center for Disease Control. The number of males killed from 2000-2006 was 12,478. The number of females was 6579. This is for the car driver and the passengers.

This study showed that July and August were the worst months for teen car accident deaths. It's thought that this is because there is more unstructered driving and less supervision and more opportunities for teen driving.

The big take away from this and other studies is that teen crashes increase with the number of passengers in the car and with night time driving. Jurisdictions with restrictions on the number of passengers and on driving at night have 20% fewer teen crashes.

Many states have gone to graduated driving. Cincinnati injury lawyer Anthony Castelli stated, "The best systems have  a learner's stage, starting no earlier than age 16 and including 25-50 or more hours of supervised driving, followed by a license at 16½ or older. There are  strong restrictions on night driving and on other teens riding in the vehicles.

The night restrictions should start at 9 or 10 pm, and no more than 1 teen passenger should be allowed in a vehicle with a newly licensed driver any time unless there's a supervisor. These restrictions should extend until the 18th birthday. Although this may seem harsh it's shown proven results."

Studies also show that parental supervision is significant. Parents should give their children a clear understanding of what is expected of them above and beyond the rules imposed by law.
