Mesa Boogie Mini Guitar Amp Shootout by David Andrew Johnson of World Music Nashville

David Andrew Johnson of World Music Nashville dragged every mini lunchbox-size guitar amp in the music store into the same room to determine if a Game Changing guitar head could be found. The results where impressive, inspiring, and surprising.

Dec. 20, 2011 - PRLog -- Nashville, TN - Dec. 21, 2011.  Dave Johnson of World Music Nashville dragged every mini lunchbox-size guitar amp in the music store into the same room. Among the brand names where Vox, Orange, Blackstar, and Mesa Boogie. He hoped to determine if the dream of a fully featured, professional sounding amp in a small package had finally been realized. The results where impressive, inspiring, and surprising.

These mini amps are very small in comparison to the traditional brutes guitarist carry around. As an example the Mesa Boogie Mini Rectifier Twenty-Five and the Mesa Boogie TransAtlantic TA-15 measure just twelve and a half inches wide and weigh only twelve pounds. It is astonishing how small these lunch-box size heads look when you sit one on top of a full size guitar head. Their compact size might lead one to believe they are significantly scaled down versions of pro amps. The shootout claims this could not be further from the truth.

The shootout and resulting article were not about infinitely small technical details regarding amp specs. The comparison was purely about whether a guitar and amp sound could get you so excited that you want to quit your job and go home to practice to be a guitar god. With the help of an unnamed rock star playing, Dave said one of the amps did. The phrase that came to his mind after the amp tests was “Game Changer”.  He goes on to say, “they may not revolutionize society as a whole, like the telephone and the personal computer, but these new products … offer the potential to significantly and permanently alter the life of traveling and recording musicians“.

The article concludes that there are 4 things that make these mini guitar heads real game changers. 1) size/portability, 2) feature rich versatility, 3) multiwatt power, and 4) a variety of terrific tones. Having all four in one guitar head is what changes the game. Leave one facet out, and the amp is just another nice amp. Here is a mouth full from David Andrew Johnson “It is amazing that now you can have a heavy-duty road constructed head, multi-tubed up and tricked out, enabling you to practice or record at low wattage or blow a drummer off his stool, while giving you a fistful of great amp sounds in a package that you can carry with one single finger. Hallelujah!”  There was a clear winner in this personal test, but you will need to go to the web article to see the details. / full article http://www.worldmusicnashville.com/latest-news-wmn-opinio... /
