Dec. 20, 2011 - PRLog -- Aeroporti di Roma makes it known that, as of 00.01 hours on January 1st, 2012, it will be forced to stop operation of the handling system for luggage in transit, known as NET 6000 and inaugurated in July 2010, with an investment of 21ml Euro. Aeroporti di Roma informs that the old baggage handling system will be reactivated.

ENAC – the National Civil Aviation Body – as of May 2011 and following specific investigations, established the amount to be paid by Airlines for use of the NET 6000 service, and destined only to cover the costs sustained by Aeroporti di Roma.
From the month of May 2011 the Airlines, and in particular Alitalia, main user of the service, have failed to comply with the provisions set down by ENAC – the National Civil Aviation Body – and continue to reiterate their refusal to pay the amount due to Aeroporti di Roma for use of the NET 6000 service.

NET 6000 is one of the largest technological platforms in Europe, capable of handling over 6000 items of baggage per hour, and it was created as a successful response to the “baggage crisis” that occurred in Summer 2009, which regarded problems with handling and sorting of baggage in transit at Leonardo da Vinci International Airport.
In July 2011, IATA – International Air Transport Association – awarded Aeroporti di Roma a certificate attesting the results achieved. Furthermore, NET 6000 has also helped improve the punctuality of flights and, as a consequence, of airport operations in general.

Aeroporti di Roma is not responsible for any lack of service in relation to baggage handling for passengers in transit through Leonardo da Vinci airport on closure of the NET 6000 service and for any critical situations arising from return to the previous state of operations.

In compliance with the rules of transparency that have always characterised the operations of Aeroporti di Roma, interruption of the service as of January 1st, 2012 will be notified to the Airlines operating from Leonardo da Vinci, the connected airports, the Consumer Associations, the Trade Unions, the Airport Users Committee, and all the main Trade Associations.
