To Underwrite This Special Occasion
Saturday, December 17, 2011, Oakland, California -- Home of Chicken and Waffles, a favorite Oakland based Soul Food restaurant since 2004, along with Geoffrey Pete, CALPAC, Center of Hope Community Church, Pastor Brandon and Bishop Ernestine Reems will host a complimentary Christmas Brunch on Christmas Day, Sunday, December 25th, 2011 for members of the Oakland area community. Restaurateur Derreck Johnson opens his popular restaurant for the fifth year in a row to anyone in the community who otherwise may not be able to enjoy a hot meal on Christmas Day.
“We do this because we love our community and we want to give back, especially during this time of year,” said Johnson. “We want to offer what we have and are blessed to create this opportunity to come together and share the holiday season. The real bonus is that we meet wonderful and interesting people. It truly is our pleasure.”
Johnson’s staff will be on hand to oversee numerous volunteers from local churches, shelters and residents in the community. Johnson also expects a few celebrity guests to pitch in as well as Oakland community leaders and elected officials. “We invite everyone to participate and in past years the support has been amazing! In times of need people dig deep and it’s a day we all appreciate being a part of,” says Johnson.
The meals will be donated by various local businesses and churches in addition to popular items from the HCW menu. Johnson estimates they will serve about 300 people.
