Evan Guthrie Law Firm Volunteers In Heirs Property Wills Clinic

PRLog (Press Release) - Dec. 16, 2011 - Attorney Evan Guthrie of the Evan Guthrie Law Firm in Charleston, South Carolina participated in a wills clinic for Center for Heirs' Property Preservation on Saturday May 21st 2011. The Clinic took place at the Greater Goodwill AME Church in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Attorney Evan Guthrie helped with the clinic by preparing wills and estate plans for homeowners to prevent their homes and property from becoming heirs property. Attorney Guthrie and other attorneys and law student volunteers donated their time to educate homeowners about heirs property and estate planning and to prepare wills to make sure their land went through probate court and not heirs property. Mr. Guthrie was glad to be able to help those in the community that needed assistance and prevent a real problem that affects local citizens.

The Center for Heirs' Property Preservation has a mission statement of serving, supporting and empowering heirs' property owners and their communities. Heirs' property is the name given to land that is owned by a group of family members who are the descendants of the original purchaser. The deed to the land is registered in the name of a deceased family member. Usually, the property has been passed in this manner because the ancestor either did not have a will or no one probated the will. With each new generation, it is likely that family members may die without leaving wills stating who should inherit their share of the land.
