It was early on in my life that I quickly learned that true heroes are not found in some fairy tale or story book movie episode. Instead, real life heroes like entrepreneurs are seemingly ordinary people that are inevitably propelled by circumstances to take it upon themselves to conjure up a special true grit that comes from deep down in their soul. Precisely, the cause of this change is elusive and varies but is based in the need to fix a perceived dilemma. Entrepreneurship is the pursuit of change focused on adding value. I call these amazing people our “Altruistic Entrepreneur Heroes” because they understand the impact and necessity of their benevolent sacrifices. They come in all shapes, colors and sizes like Robin Lim, Bruno Serato, Sal Dimiceli, Diane Latiker and Taryn Davis. Each is dedicated to affecting life change for other people. As entrepreneur heroes they are willing to sacrifice themselves to a cause whether it’s ending poverty, improving education, technology innovation or better healthcare for everyone. Their personal awakening often sparks an evolution that spreads among us. (Enjoy my video blog - news commentary)
Although these conscious heroes have affected tangible life changes for many, lots of work remains. Just look around your local community and I am sure you will find a worthy cause.
As I travel across America, it is tough not to be alarmed by the accelerating pace of the job losses in cities like Miami, Detroit and Baltimore. Unemployment in the African American and Hispanic communities has hit record levels 50% or more.
The unemployment numbers are particularly devastating when coupled with the recent study, “Comparative Indicators of Education in the United States and Other G-8 Countries; a report that found the United States public education systems rank very low compared to other industrialized nations in providing our country with educated high wage workers. For example, the U.S. ranks 25th out of 30 countries in math and 24th out of 30 countries in science skills. This fact means American kids graduating school and adults training for careers in comparison qualify mainly for low wage jobs considered about $12 per hour that are easily replaceable.
In general, there are really only two ways to make a giant career leap towards becoming a wealthy millionaire. It could be accomplished by either expensive advanced education with hopes of leading to high level executive positions or starting your own business working for the rewards of business entrepreneurship. Both are life-long commitments that require more than a simple desire for money – both paths require tireless work habits, innovation and finding your passion in talents that add value to the community.
As the stressful holidays approach, typically during a depressed economy with high unemployment rates and warm weather our neighborhoods experience increased violent crimes particularly in the urban communities. If you are unemployed remember to stay positive – be real with yourself by making honest and productive choices for the entire family.
Keep your head up remember your actions make a difference in the community. Make sure you can look back being proud of the choices you made. Perhaps, you decided to take control of your future despite the economic crisis you may live in everyday. Maybe you chose to return to school to advance your education or trade. You have the power to change many lives including your own - no matter how tough your situation.
Become a turtle - grow a hardened shell to protect yourself against negative thinkers. No matter what age, race, religion or gender; you are the “agent of your destiny” that navigates the rough waters to discover that promise land. Don’t take no for an answer, be determined to succeed. Learn from successful people - even if you are unemployed focus your everyday schedule on accomplishing tasks that build your dreams. Live your dream at first even if you’re faking it. Growth will come from your consistent daily actions like a puzzle - piece by piece your vision can become a reality.
Entrepreneurship is a full time job 24/7 in growing a business that adds value to your community. Treat your time with great respect it’s like GOLD. Write down your schedule planning out the productive use of your time. Remember entrepreneurs are not just one track minded rather they are well balanced sustainable people that have many elements working in concert with one another. Train your mind, body and soul to succeed – it’s a long distance race. Find personal free time to recharge your battery gaining new ideas and perspectives that will improve the quality of the business products or services.
Get other positive business people involved from your community. Build widespread enthusiasm and momentum for your initiates focused on providing true value that will bring you and others rewards. Entrepreneurs find success when the marketplace perceives value in your product or services. Remain close to your roots and trusted family members.
Overcome your fears – nothing is every accomplished unless you actually do the work. Don’t be afraid to fail. Most of our learning comes thru failures that require us to make changes. Learn to adapt quickly in any environment. Embrace the path to continually improving yourself whether its education, business plans or personal relationships. People grow thru experiences - both good and bad.
Change your perception of failures begin to accept it as a natural part of becoming successful. The definition of a life-long entrepreneur is precisely what it sounds like: These are people who start multiple companies. Think back to the 1990’s when Apple Computer was close to bankruptcy. It was only through decades of undaunted tenacity that Apple, CEO Steve Jobs and company achieved the vision as one of the most innovative technology companies in the world. If one passion doesn't work out, adapt or move on to the next big idea. Conversely, you may find value in growing a business that employs people or creates change within your community. Remember going on a road trip with a bunch of friends is more about the learning experiences found in the journey.
Discovering the positive power within failure will make you a stronger entrepreneur, but it goes beyond business. Devastating setbacks occur in all aspects of our lives, and the sooner we learn to face failure and regain control, the more fulfilling our lives become – remember success is your choice.
