Dec. 14, 2011 - PRLog -- This fall season was all about finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease as more than 50 residents, family members, and employees of The Buckingham senior living community gathered to support efforts to end Alzheimer’s disease in the annual Houston Walk to End Alzheimer’s.  The fundraising efforts resulted in a total donation by The Buckingham of over $24,000 to the Houston and Southeast Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. The final donation from The Buckingham includes a gift from the Senior Quality Lifestyles Corporation (SQLC) Charitable Foundation which matched 50 percent of the funds raised by residents and staff.

“The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is an event that our residents and staff look forward to each year,” said Cathy Lightfoot, director of sales and marketing at The Buckingham.  “It proves to be a wonderful way for the entire community to come together for a great cause.”

In the months leading up to the walk, The Buckingham hosted a series of events to raise funds and awareness for the cause. The community held a pet contest in which residents and staff made donations to vote on their favorite community pet.  They also hosted an elegant evening of wine and dinner as part of the fundraising efforts.

The Buckingham’s sister communities, Edgemere in Dallas and Querencia at Barton Creek in Austin, also participated in their respective cities Walk to End Alzheimer’s events.  With all three communities fundraising efforts and the match from the SQLC Charitable Foundation, SQLC will have raised more than $94,500 for the Alzheimer’s Association this year.

In 2008, SQLC founded the SQLC Charitable Foundation, a nonprofit foundation that operates to make grants to and support programs and services that advance the interests of seniors, from Alzheimer’s research to education.
