Carl Scheible, the managing director of PayPal, said: ‘We’ll see a huge change over the next few years in the way we shop and pay for things. By 2016, you’ll be able to leave your wallet at home and use your mobile as the 21st century digital wallet. The lines between the online world and high street will soon disappear altogether. Children born today will become the first “cashless generation”. Some 49per cent of mobile phone owners currently make purchases from the handsets, generally buying software such as Apps, music, games or video. However, the study suggests they will soon operate in the same way as debit and credit cards, where there is a direct link to the user’s bank account. Quite apart from making purchases, customers will be able to get real-time updates on their current accounts. At the same time, money-off shopping vouchers and loyalty card points could be stored on the handsets.
