Summary
Germany currently has a total installed capacity of 161,570 MW with nuclear capacity of 18,373 MW. Germany has 17 nuclear power reactors operating in the country generating 133 billion kWh of power production as of 2010. Out of 17 nuclear reactors, seven nuclear reactors have been temporarily shut down as of April 2011 and are undergoing a safety review. The safety review is expected to take three months. The nuclear energy contributes around 21% of country’s electricity generation. The nuclear reactors are of Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR) and Boiling Water Reactors (BWR) type. Nuclear energy plays an important role in the Germany’s electricity generation mix. RWE Power AG, Vattenfall AB and EON Kernkraft are the some of the key players in the Germany’s nuclear energy industry. Currently there are no nuclear power plants that are under construction in the country. The current energy policy of the country is favoring renewable sources for power generation and expected scheduled shutdown of six of the nuclear reactors during the forecast period 2011–2020 will decline the contribution of nuclear in the country’s power generation.
