Alyssa Spurgeon comes from the small town of Cottonwood in Northern California, with a population of less than 3,000. It is incredible to think that a dance studio in a town that draws from such a small population could produce a world champion. However, Alyssa showed a love of dance from an early age. She joined California Dance Company when she was three and has been a student there for ten years.
The journey to the world championship was long and somewhat difficult because of setbacks stemming from changes and injuries. Much determination and practicing went into the final product seen on that world stage. Alyssa first competed in Sacramento, California against 500 other routines and was chosen to compete at the national level. The American Team Finals were held this past July in Atlantic City where she vied for one of three slots available for female soloists her age. Alyssa had to compete against the best from the USA. She finished in the #1 spot for her age division, securing her advancement to the world championships. Approximately 30 countries, well represented with very strong teams, attended the world championship.
Many thanks go to her parents, Cindee and Ron, for their support and dedication, along with instilling a strong work ethic in Alyssa. Also many thanks go out to the whole staff at California Dance Company.
