How to Make Battery No Longer Be a "Heart Disease"

Laptops might not work if AC house current is not available.

During the last 30 years' laptop development, CPU performance has risen by 200 times but only battery capacity has not a tremendous transformation.  According to a survey, it is hoped that laptop standby time is 6-8 hours, that is a whole's work; yet based on development speed of current battery technology, battery capacity can't have a leap progress in future years.

Presently, most of laptops use lithium-ion batteries. Besides, though many new batteries emerge, lab research success has not achieved massive commercial application. For instance, the concept of fuel battery was put forward 10 years ago, but so fall this battery has not fulfilled universal application due to immature conditions.

To improve battery lifetime should focus on three aspects: reduce capacity consumption through increasingly mature silicon technology; optimize battery consumption with system itself and break through capacity restriction with new battery technology development. Presently, most obvious solution is decreasing efficiency to meet consumer's requirement. Ultrabook is a typical examples of this solution.

Of course, better controlling consumption is absolutely a good solution in the condition that lithium battery itself could not solve this in timely. Intel Ultrabook product latest launched clearly shows that reducing processor power consumption by half has greatly extended product use time. At least under the same battery capacity, Ultrabook could work for 4-5 hours (no games or HD video). In this level, half-day use time could come true but still could not attain 8 hours' work time expected by consumers. Thus, consumers are eager to new battery could solve this "heard disease" in the coming years.
