Julie Fouse shows off her first solo shirt tail
Margaret (Julie) Fouse became the first female student at Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) to solo with their new pilot training partner, Sunrise Aviation. Fouse accomplished her first solo on December 3rd and her second solo flight on December 6th. She is majoring in Professional Pilot Technology at FSCJ and only began flying in September.
The FSCJ pilot training program is now co-located at Cecil Airport in Jacksonville alongside their Aviation Center of Excellence. FSCJ has had a pilot training program for 10 years but moved the actual flying to the Cecil Airport on September 1st of this year. Now students can fly before and after their FSCJ classes at Cecil Center South. Pilot training with Sunrise Aviation is now available 7 days a week, too.
Fouse also became the first FSCJ student at Cecil Airport to solo in the Sunrise Aviation Cessna 152. She is the third student to solo this fall at Cecil Airport in the FSCJ program. The first two solo students flew the Cessna 172 Skyhawk. Sunrise Aviation now has a Piper Warrior, Piper Arrow, and Piper Seminole available for use in the FSCJ pilot training program in addition to the Cessna aircraft. Most of the Sunrise Aviation aircraft at Jacksonville are equipped with GPS. Many are also equipped with HSI. The Piper Warrior is equipped with Garmin’s G500 glass cockpit and includes dual GPS receivers.
Eric Walker was Fouse’s flight instructor. Eric was also a student in the FSCJ Professional Pilot Technology program a few years ago. Walker spent some time working as a flight instructor after he received his flight instructor certificate and then flew as a commercial pilot for a company that hauled freight. Walker recently returned to FSCJ to continue to work and build experience as a flight instructor.
There are currently more than 20 students flying with Sunrise Aviation in the FSCJ program at Cecil Airport. Enrollment projections indicate an increase in enrollment during the Spring 2012 semester to 30 or more flight students. The Professional Pilot Technology program is especially popular with veterans transitioning to civilian employment. Veterans who qualify for the Post 9/11 GI Bill typically are able to maximize their pilot training benefit by flying at a degree granting public college like FSCJ. Florida residents also enjoy exceptionally low tuition rates at Florida State College. The courses and facilities at Sunrise Aviation’s Cecil Airport satellite are FAA approved under Part 141 of the Federal Aviation Regulations.
Sunrise Aviation has their main base of operations at Ormond Beach, Florida. Sunrise Aviation has been in business training pilots since 1983. They currently have more than 40 aircraft in the training fleet. Students at Sunrise Aviation in Ormond Beach come from all over the world to receive pilot training. Many recent students have arrived from Tunisia, India, Nigeria, Brazil, Bahamas, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. During the past 10 years, Sunrise Aviation has graduated students from over 50 different countries.
