Dec. 8, 2011 - PRLog -- These past hundred years musical clocks were a marvel to behold. The timepieces were initially created for public use to help the townsfolk know the time. The very first known musical clock created for individual use was created in 1598. Music clocks are clocks that sing a tune within the hour often combined with an hour strike. The melody can be played on combs, bells, organ pipes, chimes or even dulcimer strings. The music clocks performed their tunes using a pinned barrel that turned and shifted levers that played the notes. It was a wonder to behold during that time with all of those highlights placed on the timepiece for it to be more appealing and you could even consider this as a brilliant timepiece engineering feat.

Some of the renowned classic music composers like Haydn, Bach, Handel, Mozart, and Beethoven all created music mainly to be performed by the musical timepieces, specifically organ musical clocks. Cuckoo clocks or Grandfather clocks are a common example of musical clocks, but there are also firms that make musical organ clocks, Holmberg as an example, and a few which make timepieces where the music are played on flutes. Emilian Werhle is famous for making music clocks with sounds similar to trumpeters in the mid 1800’s. He used a system of pipes attached to bellows with valves that were opened and closed.

Wehrle also designed a musical clock that sounded like a bird and had an animated carving of a bird on the apogee of the clock. Wehrle had been a clock creator in the black forest thus his timepieces have the characteristically intricate carvings of leaves, animals, and birds. The current musical clock was first made by Rhythm Small World Clocksand then joined by Seiko in 2000. These kind of clocks have electronic sounds rather than mechanical sound and rather than complex carvings they frequently have lighting and motions synchronized to the music of the clock. Since these modern music clocks use electronic sounds stored on a computer chip they can provide a much larger collection of tunes in each clock. Instead of having one song or maybe three or four, the modern clock could have as much as 18 tracks to choose from. Rhythm magic motion and Seiko melodies in motion are the top contenders as the finest musical clock in our generation. No doub it is a fascinating advancement from its forefathers with fresh modern twists along with a more intricate design, technology, and music that anyone will be interested to see and hear.
