As of the end of last week, Apple in terms of volume, host an astonishing 590,138 apps on their app store, trailed closely by Android with 320,315, RIM sits at No.3 with 43,544 and Microsoft comes in at last place with a modest 35,479 mobile applications.
“Applications are software en masse and these figures are too enticing to be ignored,” said CEO Rick Hoy of Asia-Pacific based iApps Pty Ltd.
“What we’re seeing is the fastest growing consumer segment in the history of commerce and as a veteran of the dotcom era, I have never seen anything like this before.
The fight for business began around July 2008, following the much anticipated launch of the iTunes App Store, prompting search engine giant Google to launch their Android operating system in July, 2008. Recently app stores have been launched for the Blackberry RIM and Microsoft Windows Phone platforms.
“Initially, apps were all about fun, think Angry birds and Karenji, now they’re maturing to suit the needs of business in ways that traditional software simply cannot,” said Mr Hoy.
Across all platforms, the top categories are: Entertainment 16.68% Games 13.36% Books 10.21% Lifestyle 8.02% Utilities 7.13% Education 7.08% Travel 4.84% Business 3.76% Reference 3.73% Music 3.32% Health & Fitness 3.28% Productivity 3.09% Sports 2.92% News 2.85% Social Networking 2.71% (mobilewallla analytics 2011).
