Dec. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- Dear Doctor - Dentistry & Oral Health magazine, the nation's leading source of dental healthcare advice for consumers,  today lifted the curtain on the stunning new smile of Lorna Ficker - the third lucky winner of  "Dear Doctor's Ultimate Smile Makeover."  Ficker, 55, of Poughkeepsie, NY had so many dental problems since childhood that she couldn’t even imagine what it would be like to have normal teeth.

"I'm so grateful," said Lorna, who was chosen from among 10 finalists. "It's just been amazing. I never in my life thought I would ever see it."

With a mouthful of shifted, decayed and broken teeth, along with failing crowns and fillings, Lorna's case was very challenging. Her transformation, made possible by Dear Doctor and the generosity of local dental professionals and national sponsors, is truly dazzling.

"I still can't believe it, it's too exciting," Lorna said. "I always wondered what it would be like to have normal teeth. It's just been a fantasy of mine."

Lorna received, among other services, braces, a fixed bridge, and porcelain crowns and veneers.

Dear Doctor enlisted the services of Dr. Richard K. Whalen of Dental Design Studio in Poughkeepsie, NY, who provided oral hygiene instruction using the Nimbus toothbrush, replaced all defective fillings, and, after orthodontics, corrected Lorna's tooth positioning, placed new porcelain crowns, porcelain veneers and bridgework. Dr. Ahmed Mansour of Sunshine Orthodontics in Wappingers Falls, NY corrected Lorna's malpositioned teeth using braces to make her smile symmetrical and create space for her missing front tooth. Everyone involved admired Lorna's courage for putting so much effort into her own oral health as she continues a 15-year battle with debilitating multiple sclerosis.

"I thought, I can't really do anything about my MS," said Lorna, in explaining why she decided to enter the makeover contest. "But I could fix my smile if I entered. So that's what I decided, I'm gonna go for it."

Dear Doctor President and Publisher Dr. Mario Vilardi explained that enhancement of Lorna's appearance was only part of the goal. "What separates this contest from other smile makeover contests or TV shows is our ultimate commitment to returning a person to complete health, not just creating a pretty smile. Dr. Richard Whalen and Dr. Ahmed Mansour should be very proud of their accomplishments as they not only created a beautiful masterpiece but returned Lorna to total oral health."
