Scala Campaign Supports NAACP's Proposed NY-6 Map

Scala for Congress Campaign Supports NAACP's Proposed NY-6 Map

PRLog - Dec. 5, 2011 - December 5, 2011

QUEENS, NY – As a result of population changes measured by the 2010 census, New York is losing two seats in the United States House of Representatives.  This will necessitate major alterations to congressional districts throughout the state.  In some cases, redistricting may threaten the interests of minority communities.  The state NAACP has addressed this concern by proposing new maps for four congressional districts.  One such district is NY-6, located in southeast Queens.  In order to maintain the district's black majority, the new map would extend the eastern border into western Nassau County.  The northern and western boundaries of the district would also be modified.  NAACP State President Hazel Dukes stated that the proposal would help "preserve New York's black congressional districts and black New Yorkers' voting rights."

Democratic candidate for the sixth congressional seat Mike Scala supports the NAACP's proposal, saying:  "There are only three black-majority congressional districts in New York, and the sixth is one of them.  The new map will ensure that redistricting will not dilute the rights of the area’s voters.  In these turbulent times, radically altering the political landscape in southeast Queens could further destabilize a community that has been among the hardest hit by the economic and mortgage crises.”
