ScottMadden Issues 2011 Utility Warehouse Benchmarking Reports

Dec. 2, 2011 - PRLog -- ScottMadden, Inc., one of North America’s leading energy consulting firms, recently issued Utility Materials Management Benchmarking Reports under the auspices of the Utility Materials Management Benchmarking Consortium (UMMBC).

Materials management plays a critical role in a utility’s ability to sustain high plant capacity levels and meet customer service expectations. John Sequeira, ScottMadden partner, said, “Having the right material, at the right place, at the right time can make the difference between smooth, cost-effective operations and a public relations nightmare.”

Benchmarking can help, but obtaining comparative data for utility maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) warehouses is a major challenge. The metrics that are publicly available reflect the performance parameters of commercial distribution warehouses—which are fundamentally different than our peer group as noted in the figure.

About the UMMBC
The UMMBC was established by ScottMadden in 2007 to benchmark utility MRO warehouse and inventory practices and performance. Participation has grown from the original 15 founding utilities to 47 member utilities today.

In 2011, leading utilities with 375 warehouses participated in the study, and six analyses were prepared:

1.   Fossil Generation warehouses
2.   Nuclear Generation warehouses
3.   Gas Turbine Generation warehouses
4.   Hydro Generation warehouses
5.   Transmission & Distribution (combined) warehouses
6.   Distribution Only warehouses

Survey reports are typically made available only to those utilities who participate in the specific survey in question.
