Dec. 1, 2011 - PRLog -- Glass tiles are very popular for kitchen and bathroom design and they will certainly add both colour and style but there are some things to be aware of, much the same when applying other tile materials, there are certain guidelines to follow.

Glass tiles come in many variations and colours and contrary to popular belief, they are very strong and durable once installed. Installing glass tiles can be a little tricky because they are more likely to break when cutting them but once installed, they are very strong.
There are different types of glass tiles and they are commonly installed as wall tiles, there are certain types of glass tiles that are suitable for floor tile installation but not all glass tiles are recommended for floor installation. When looking for glass tiles always be certain where you are going to use them and get as much advice on the different typos as you can.

Glass tiles are non absorbent and it is not totally necessary to have them sealed, some home owners prefer to apply a sealant which will protect the grout lines as they can become stained over time, always ensure you get as much advice from the tile store you purchased the glass tiles from for advice about glass tile sealant.

Glass tiles once installed will last for many years and they are very strong and durable but cracks can occur in certain circumstances, glass tiles are no more prone to cracking than other tile materials and the problem is usually due to substrate problems or the tile adhesive you have used. The substrate should be perfect for glass tile installation the correct adhesive should be used. Always ensure you have all of the correct tile adhesives and the base and substrate are perfect and prepared.

Glass tiles are very easy to clean and maintain and because they are nonporous, they do not absorb substances and any dirt or residue on the glass tiles is likely to be on the surface. Cleaning and maintenance of glass tiles does however need to be done with care and no abrasive cloths or materials should ever be used on the glass tiles as this may damage the surface. A little warm water and a cloth are often sufficient to clean glass tiles, ensuring that you dry the tiles after cleaning to avoid any smears. If your glass tiles are particularly dirty and substances are hard to remove, it is worth investing in a glass tile cleaning solution. Always select a tile cleaner that is suitable for glass tiles, this ensures that no harmful materials are used.
