Dec. 1, 2011 - PRLog -- UKSA also has the required facilities to deliver Gold Residential programmes.

The DofE programme is designed to give young people, aged 14 - 25 years, the chance to develop skills for work and life. The scheme encourages commitment and determination, fosters a spirit of adventure and develops the ability to work collegiately with others.  The Award is recognised by many employers and further educational establishments.

UKSA’s Youth Development Co-ordinator Lee Jones said: “The DofE scheme is an inspirational programme which allows young people to discover a great deal about themselves and their ability to cope in unfamiliar circumstances. Along the way, they meet new friends and develop a range of practical and soft skills which will support them throughout life.”

“Our AAP status means that UKSA can now use its expertise to help even more young people unlock their potential through the DofE scheme. UKSA offers a fun and safe outdoor learning environment and the Isle of Wight is an ideal location for expeditions because of its accessible rivers and beaches, its coastline and its climate.”

UKSA has been developing and providing outdoor learning environments since 1987. The charity supports, empowers and educates young people of all abilities and ages by introducing them to the challenge, adventure, fun and rewards of watersports, sailing and high performance yachting.

To facilitate its work, UKSA has created a unique environment with a large fleet, a waterside campus and first class teaching expertise to challenge young people and give them the confidence to thrive and succeed in modern society.

The charity recently launched Change Direction, a Job Centre funded training programme for young, unemployed Islanders to address and remove barriers to employment.

About UKSA

UKSA has worked to provide life changing outcomes for young people for 25 years. In that time, the charity has helped more than 100,000 individuals challenge personal boundaries, develop personal and employment skills and embark on fulfilling maritime careers.

This has been achieved by harnessing high quality maritime education, mentoring and support and making it available to all regardless of their background and ability.

An increasing number of young people are choosing the maritime sector as a career choice over and above University or other employment sectors. They are inspired by the rewards of a career with global opportunities.

UKSA trains 800 people each year for maritime employment, and works with a diverse range of employers, from the superyacht owner Roman Abramovich to the Nielson Holidays and PGL activity holidays to help them into employment.

UKSA was founded by the retail entrepreneur Noel Lister. The charity celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2012.
