ABB wins Rs. 175 crore substation order in India to improve grid reliability

765 kilovolt substation to facilitate reliable Electricity Transmission

Dec. 1, 2011 - PRLog -- Bangalore, India, Dec. 1, 2011 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group has won an order worth about Rs.175 crore from Powergrid Corporation of India Ltd. to supply equipment for the Champa transmission substation in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh.
The Champa substation will be a pooling station receiving power at 765 and 400 kilovolt (kV) and is part of Powergrid’s plan to build a stronger national grid in India.

ABB’s project scope includes the design, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of the 765 kV and 400 kV switchyards, including the civil works. Key products to be supplied include circuit breakers, current transformers, capacitive voltage transformers, surge arrestors and protection, control and relay panels. ABB will also supply an IEC 61850, open standards based substation automation system to facilitate communication between the numerous devices within the substation and beyond.
“We are already executing several 765 kV substation projects for Powergrid and this success reiterates our partnership approach and long-term customer focus,” said Peter Leupp, ABB’s head of Power Systems. “ABB continues to contribute to the development of India’s ultrahigh voltage network.”
“These substations will contribute to the development of India’s 765 kV and 400 kV power infrastructure by enhancing transmission capacity, facilitating grid reliability and improving power stability, they will help meet the growing demand for electricity and improve availability and quality of power for consumers.” said N Venu, ABB India’s head of Power Systems.
Powergrid, the central transmission utility in India, has the mandate for planning, co-ordination, supervision and control over complete inter-state transmission system in the country. The utility owns and operates about 86,190 km of transmission lines and 138 substations with transformation capacity of about 95,125 MVA (mega-volt-ampere). It is responsible for the transmission of over half the total power generated in the country.
