In 1811, a masterpiece of literature was unveiled to the world, mysteriously published under the nom de plume “A Lady” to protect the author’s identity. Two centuries later, Jane Austen’s brilliant novel has been artfully readapted for today’s readers of all ages, transplanted from the egalitarian estates of 19th Century Britain to America’s prosperous South.
In A.P. Maddox’ shining literary debut, Brighton Publishing will welcome print and eBook readers to the world of Belcher Cottage in mid-2012, available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and bookstores nationwide.
From the talented pen of A.P. Maddox comes a beautiful retelling of an unforgettable story. When the Hathcock family patriarch dies, Mrs. Hathcock and her daughters find themselves in dire and unfamiliar straits, facing poverty, the prospect of a new home, and surviving on their own for the very first time.
Caroline leaves her heart behind at Northland when she says goodbye to her secret love, Conner Burroughs. Ashelynn quickly finds romance in their new home in the arms of the dashingly handsome William Houston—while the respectable new family friend, Captain Harrison Lowder, admires her from afar. But the flames of young love are often the hardest to keep alight, and for both sisters romance comes with a price.
Before long a new suitor will enter the sisters’ lives, and southern passions and tempers truly begin to flare. No one is without secrets in the world surrounding Belcher Cottage—and eventually, the truth will have to come out or their world will come crashing down.
Money, love, history, and pride all collide in this ambitious Southern adaption of one of literature’s greatest novels. When young love is concerned, can sense or sensibility survive?
“Great literature, like the great visual arts, never goes out of style—and with the passage of time the added beauty of it is the opportunity to build upon it,” said Kathie McGuire, director of Brighton Publishing LLC. “A.P. Maddox pays homage to Jane Austen with this adaptation, and Austen fans and new readers alike will love this modern day romance that will tug at your heartstrings with every twist and turn.”
Unlike the best-selling parody Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters (Quirk Books, 2009), which predominantly relied on Austen’s own text, Belcher Cottage is an original work of fiction based on the plot and themes of Austen’s classic. A.P. Maddox lives in Gilbert, Arizona with her husband and four children. She was raised on the stories and music of earlier generations, and it is this nostalgia and appreciation for the past, made more accessible in a contemporary voice, that Maddox wishes to bring to young, new audiences.
