$1 AND $100: A Novel that Portrays Money as the Protagonist

In a time of financial adversity, author Heather Hummel is using an unlikely character as the protagonist in her forthcoming novel…a $1 bill and a $100 bill. Not the usual hero or heroine we’re used to reading about in novels, but most certainly one that we all have an interest in. Amidst all the endless chatter alluding to solutions for how to “fix” the economy, Hummel is exploring a new angle in $1 AND $100.

“With all the talk lately of a failing, or arguably failed, economy and the tactile ways of overcoming it, for this project I am exploring the emotional relationship people have with money through the characters in $1 AND $100,” Hummel says.

The novel, $1 AND $100, of which is well into the writing process, opens in the mid-1970s with Sylvia, a young, widowed waitress who receives a $100 bill as a tip. Sylvia’s son, Jack, receives a brand new, crisp $1 bill as change for candy he buys. His curiosity over the new bill, especially questioning the meaning of ‘In God We Trust,’ prompts him to write his name on the back of both his $1 bill and his mother’s $100 bill. From there the bills are sent out into the world as the novel progresses, tracking them through different people’s hands, decades, and places.

When Hummel’s friend Tanya Brockett, an entrepreneur specialist, heard of Hummel’s $1 AND $100 project, she immediately referred her to KickStarter’s website as the ideal place to launch the project. Meant for creative types with a vision to be partnered with those who believe in helping those visions come to fruition, KickStarter was the perfect home for $1 AND $100. Believing in good luck, Hummel launched the $1 AND $100 project on 11/11/11.

Due to the incredible interest and feedback Hummel has received when discussing her project, she has decided that the next step is to take the $1 AND $100 project to the streets where she will film a documentary in 2012.  For the documentary, people are already enthusiastically signing up to talk about their personal relationship with money; this too has been a great source of encouragement for Hummel…proof that others want to explore the same angle.

Heather Hummel is an award-winning author and ghostwriter. The daughter of a school teacher, she grew up in Greenwich, CT with two very different perceptions of money. A graduate of the University of Virginia with Bachelors of Interdisciplinary Studies, her concentrations were English and Secondary Education.
