Nov. 29, 2011 - PRLog -- Novelist M. Everett Baylor sets the scene for his serial killer, Kevin Kettle, to plant his “flowers” which are his victims in The Garden, the first of a three part series titled The Montclair Murders.

In The Garden, M. Everett Baylor draws upon his personal knowledge and experience with handling serial killers from his background in civilian law and military law enforcement.  “I did my research for my character based on my years of experience from reading other authors as well as studying actual criminal cases,” said M. Everett Baylor during a recent interview.  “I believe that serial killers aren’t born but made. The only difference between you, me and a serial killer is our upbringing. Our family values and being taught right from wrong as a child played a huge role in us being positive contributors to society,” he stated.

The Garden is a contemporary novel exposing the mindset of the macabre mentality of an innocent boy casted off by his parents to be raised in foster homes.  The bureaucracy of the system turned a blind-eye towards the child abuse and violence so commonplace within the system.  The making of a serial killer is exposed, which quite eerily becomes to be understood by the reader.  Society gives the room for such activity to fester.   M. Everett Baylor stated, “If you believe in God and his existence then you must also believe that the devil is real as well. Good and evil battle for our souls daily. The devil is very busy in trying to persuade us to do wrong. The devil knows our weaknesses and tempts us daily. In order for us to avoid becoming Kelvin Kettle, we must call upon God for strength and guidance.”

The message of the book can be summed up by the author’s feeling, “Based on my experience, I’ve found that the foster care system in this country is broken.  The prison system is filled with men and women who became who they are because of the lives they’ve lived in foster care. Many have experienced physical and sexual abuse.  Some have even been killed while under the care of a foster family.  I believe that a major change must occur in order to prevent the Kelvin Kettle’s of the world from being born.”
M. Everett Baylor is an Iraq War Veteran with a background in law.  He lives in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.  More on his book can be viewed at http://www.pacificbookreview.com/The-Garden.php.
