Mild weather means worker wasps still think it’s summer!

The mild weather in November has resulted in a leading pest control company dealing with three times as many wasps nests in November compared to the same time last year.

PRLog - Nov. 29, 2011 - Surrey-based Cleankill Environmental Services has also had more calls than normal about unusually large numbers of cluster flies and ladybirds collecting around office windows frames and inside houses.

Paul Bates Managing Director of Cleankill said: “There are still lots of worker wasps around and we’re being called to an unusually high number of extremely active nests in roof spaces and under soffits. By this time in November we’ve normally had several hard frosts which kill off the workers leaving only the queens to survive through to the next summer.

“What we’re seeing now is very rare and we’ve had three times as many calls to wasps nests this month compared to last year. I can’t remember this many calls in November in the 30-plus years I’ve been in the pest control business. ”

Cleankill is also expecting a surge in calls about rats and mice during the next cold spell as the rodents try to find their way into buildings for the winter. The first indication that they have a problem is when people go into their lofts to retrieve the Christmas decorations and find they have been used as nesting material.

Paul Bates explained: “Any decorations that have been chewed should be thrown away as they will have been contaminated by urine and droppings – even if you can’t see them. It’s then a good idea to try to find out where the rodents entered your attic and block up the holes. Ideally, call a professional pest control company to do a survey and find out what the problem is as it could be squirrels, rats or mice and they all need a different approach.”

Cleankill is a specialist provider of pest control services to retail, commercial and industrial properties throughout the UK.  The company deals with ‘distress’ pests such as wasps and fleas, as well as offering preventative maintenance against public health pests such as mice and rats. Cleankill can also clear and proof buildings against pest birds.
