Nov. 28, 2011 - PRLog -- Cosmetology students at Olympian University, 4501 N. Main St. in Roswell, New Mexico achieved out-of-this-world results at the recent, multi-state Educational Forum in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Roswell cosmetology school not only won first place in the three person team competition and top winner in the bridal updo contest, they also captured second place for the three-person team and the second place for bridal updo. Other school winners included third and fifth place for the fantasy mannequin category. Students from 20 schools were eligible to compete.
Under the theme “Award Winners” the team of Meghan Harris, Karina Favela and Katie Drake turned their model and fellow classmate Brooklyn Edwards into a life-sized trophy. Edwards was gilded from head to toe with a glimmering gold lame dress (complete with wings) and ingot-inspired floor hair extensions fashioned into elegant sphere-shaped balls that were wrapped in sparkling, metallic ornamentation. To complete the Midas touch, the award topper sported golden makeup and fingernail polish. The team created a shiny golden-colored platform for the living trophy to perch and spread her shimmering wings.
“The team worked very hard and literally took home the gold for their efforts,” said Peggy Richburg, director of Olympian University. “Our very talented Phase II instructor, Kristi Eaton, is famous for helping each student bring out their best and these young women applied their creativity, organizational and communicational skills, as well as good old-fashioned practice, practice, practice to produce a prize-winning result.”
Eaton said the students were winners in the classroom as well and once they decided to compete they organized weekly meetings to discuss their project, participated in fundraising and even found a sponsor to cover their traveling expenses.
There were three categories at the Educational Forum: a competition for a Bridal Mannequin, a Fantasy Mannequin, as well as a three-person team event. In the three person team competition students were told to pull out the stops and create an original, themed entry that incorporated hair and makeup that would wow the judges, spectators and fellow students. Each entry was judged based on creativity, originality, innovation, color and theme.
Other winners from Roswell included: Renee Anaya, first place in the bridal mannequin competition and Daisy Aguilar who placed second in the same category; JR Samario who took third in the fantasy hair and makeup category and Anaya who placed fifth in the same category.
Olympian University in Roswell has won approximately 20 awards in the past five years. The cosmetology school is accepting applications for men and women who are interested in a career in cosmetology.
